Terminal let-down in Dubai

As well as being the latest hotspot cruise destination, Dubai must be one of the biggest building sites on the planet. So it comes as a bit of a surprise to realise that facilities for passengers embarking on and disembarking from cruise ships in Port Rashid are rudimentary to say the least. Though thinking back, I recall that there was nothing more than a couple of marquees on the quayside when I disembarked from the Queen Mary 2 in Dubai last year. Costa Cruises have two ships operating out of the port this winter, and they will be joined by [...]

Promenade deck turns into catwalk

No excuses are needed for dressing up on most cruise ships. Least of all on a grand liner like the Queen Mary 2, where high tea is followed by high fashion ballgowns every evening. So it will be an ideal setting for a fashion show when flamboyant Australian designer Alex Perry launches his 2009 autumn and winter collection on board in Sydney Harbour on February 26. Perry, whose gowns have been modelled by Elle Macpherson, Linda Evangelista and Lily Cole, specialises in outfits which are low at the front and high at the hem. "Things that don't have a slight [...]

Happy birthday, Vicky

It hardly seems a year ago that I watched aghast as the Duchess of Cornwall failed to break the bottle of Champagne when she launched Cunard’s Queen Victoria. But it was, and the liner is now celebrating her first birthday. Since that star-studded celebration, with not only Charles and Camilla, but also Derek Jacobi and Katherine Jenkins, the ship has sailed 111,828 miles, made 222 port calls and carried 54,827 guests. The ship will spend the day in her home port of Southampton before sailing off to the Caribbean for Christmas, and then setting out on a 95-night world cruise [...]

Double fun for the family

Children who have been good little boys and girls all year can now look forward to more than a visit from Santa Claus – they can have their very own cabin on an exciting cruise. Costa Cruises have launched a discount scheme for families which means the kids can take their parents at a great discount. For example, for a seven-night cruise on Costa Concordia from Barcelona in June, fares start at £639 per adult and £349 per child, based on two adults sharing an inside cabin and two children under 17 sharing an inside cabin. Seven nights from Dubai [...]

Ruby’s run-in with a pirate

Not all pirates, even those in the Middle East, wear bandanas and carry weapons. Captain Neil Broomhall, who was last week taking the Saga Ruby on an Ancient Egypt voyage, had a run-in with a uniformed buccaneer at Sharm el Sheikh. As he explains in his blog, he was advised by the local pilot that a warship was expected to dock and if he wanted to get the best berth, he should get into port early. Schedules were changed, alarm clocks were set, and the Saga Ruby arrived at 2.30 am. “Thankfully it didn't take long before we were safely [...]

Ventura: Has she got the V-Factor?

My two weeks on Ventura are over, and I am now back in a decidedly chilly UK. So what’s the verdict on P&O’s superliner for the 21st Century? Well it was much better than I would have expected if I had believed all the critical reports from the first few months of operation. I was also aware before I boarded the ship that P&O already had plans to deal with some of the issues that had come up – such as increasing the number of sun loungers, and improving the freedom dining option which had been a bit of a [...]

Ventura: Pilots and Pirates

Tourism has yet to make a big mark on St Vincent, largest island in the Grenadines. But with its modern, though modest, cruise terminal, and with a new airport due to open in 2011, it will surely catch up with its busier neighbours. Leaping dolphins welcomed the Ventura to the port of Kingstown this morning, and after breakfast 12 of us clambered aboard a much smaller vessel, the Sea Breeze, in search of more of these delightful creatures. With the help of amiable skipper Hal Daize and his hydrophone, we were not disappointed. During the four-hour excursion, we saw countless [...]

Ventura: The rain forest by tram

Up with the lark yesterday morning, after another late night in the casino, but the early start was well worth it. The Ventura had arrived at Dominica, a lush, mountainous island whose lofty volcanic peaks are covered in tropical forests. After a short minibus ride from the tiny capital, Roseau, along a tortuous road built in the 18th century by slave labour, and past grapefruit and avocado trees, we arrived at the rain forest aerial tram, for a cable car journey through the jungle. The round-trip journey took us from the base station, 1,900 feet above sea level, through the [...]

Cinema is added to Arcadia

Arcadia, which was the largest ship in the P&O fleet until Ventura launched this year, is undergoing a major re-fit in preparation for her maiden 101-night Grand Voyage in January. A whole new section of 34 staterooms with private balconies has been added to the aft of the ship, which is in dock at the Lloydwerft shipyard in Bremerhaven, Germany. The amount of deck space around the Aquarius pool will be increased, and a larger bar is being built. Other work being carried out includes the installation of a 30-seat boutique cinema, and more room for the photo gallery. The [...]

Ventura: It’s a sparkling Christmas

It’s December 1, and Christmas has arrived early in the Caribbean. A team of riggers spent last night and today unpacking giant cardboard boxes and festooning Ventura’s bars, restaurants and public areas with maritime-themed garlands. You don’t often see clam shells, even sparkly plastic ones, among the festive decorations ashore. And you wonder whether things aren’t going a little far when even the rails around the Jacuzzis sport Christmas greenery. Ashore in Philipsburg, St Maarten, the jaunty pirates in the souvenir shops now wear white beards and red velvet hats. And the steel bands are playing the first of the [...]
