Dali’s moustache on an Epic scale

One of the things which make Norwegian Cruise Lines's ships stand out from the crowd is the colourful artwork painted on their hulls. The designs are usually inspired by the ship's name, so it's fairly easy to guess what adorns the sides of the Norwegian Sun, or the Norwegian Gem, or the Norwegian Star. But how to interpret the Norwegian Epic, the line's newest and biggest vessel, which within a few weeks will be floated out of the dockyard in France where it is under construction? That was the challenge facing the company's designers when it came to providing artwork [...]

The secret of a happy passenger

The Independence of the Seas, which returned to its summer base in Southampton last week, and which will make the UK its permanent home from 2010, is a subtly different ship from the vessel which sails Caribbean cruises during the winter. It still has the ice rink, the FlowRider surf simulator and the Johnny Rockets burger bar; it is still - together with sister ships Freedom of the Seas and Liberty of the Seas - the biggest cruise ship in the world, at least until Oasis of the Seas enters service in December. Beneath the surface though, the experience has [...]

New life for the Black Prince

The venerable cruise ship Black Prince, which has sailed under the Fred Olsen flag since 1966, is to get a new life. It has been bought by a South American company, Servicios Acuaticos de Venezuela CA (SAVECA), and is expected to be adapted for short cruises in Venezualan waters. The 11,200-ton, 450-passenger ship will be handed over to its new owners after it completes the last of a series of farewell cruise in Southampton on October 16. Olsen decided to retire the ship rather than carry out extensive modifications which would ne necessary under new safety regulations which will come [...]

Setting out on a mystery cruise

When it comes to cruises, my friend Steve Read at Sky Travel usually knows what he's talking about - he spends more time at sea than a ship's cat. For the next two weeks, however, he will not have a clue where he's going to be from one day to the next - he will be in board the Saga Ruby for Captain Philip Rentell's third annual mystery cruise. The only things passengers could be sure of when they booked this voyage was that they would be visiting 10 ports of call in at least four different countries, and at [...]

Did the ship move for you, darling?

German cruise line TUI showed a distinct lack of imagination when they took over the Celebrity Galaxy and re-named it Mein Schiff, which is German for, er, My Ship. They have got their act together now though, and put together an interesting money-back offer. Any bride who gets pregnant on her honeymoon cruise will qualify for the deal. With a completely straight face, the company's spokesman says they will require medical evidence to establish that conception took place on board before paying out. I can't, somehow, see passengers booking a honeymoon cruise on the off-chance they'll come back expecting a [...]

Clocking on with Captain Albert

Transatlantic cruises are one of the best ways to relax ever discovered, and the great thing about sailing to America is that because of the time difference, five days of the voyage can be 25 hours long. Whether you choose to use that extra time to sleep or to party, it's up to you, but either way it's heavenly. And there's no jet-lag. The downside comes when travelling in the opposite direction, and it's at this time of year that a flotilla of cruise ships is making its way from the Caribbean to spend the summer in the Mediterranean and [...]

Cunard’s precious cargo for charity

Jewellery designed by Victoria Beckham, Penelope Cruz and Angelina Jolie is among treasures arriving in the UK this weekend on board the Queen Mary 2. Other Hollywood A-listers including Miley Cyrus, Jennifer Lopes and Goldie Hawn have donated items which will be auctioned by LA-based charity Stars For A Cause. There's a Methuselah of Champagne, whose Moet et Chandon label has been signed by Ricky Gervais, Susan Sarandon and Colin Farrell, and Golden Globe posters autographed by Kate Winslet, Brad Pitt, Sigourney Weaver, Tom Hanks and Sir Ben Kingsley. Kingsley will host a preview of the auction items at Bonham's, [...]

Change of course for Balmoral

Fred Olsen Cruises are taking no risks with next year's world cruise for Balmoral (above). Rather than sail through Pirate Alley in the Gulf of Aden, the ship will now take the African west coast route on its way home from Australia. The decision was made in the wake of last weekend's attack on MSC Melody, and follows MSC's similar decision to re-route MSC Sinfonia next year. The 106-night Balmoral cruise leaves Dover on January 5, heading first to the Caribbean and then across the Pacific to Sydney, Melbourne and Perth. The original schedule had several calls in the Middle [...]

One more reason cruises are a winner

Imagine the disappointment if you had a holiday booked at a beach resort in Mexico next week. The newspapers and TV bulletins are full of reports about swine flu and pictures of travellers arriving at airports with blue face masks over their mouths and noses. The world's health experts are advising against all non-essential travel to Mexico and your holiday is ruined. No time to find new flights to another destination. No certainty you'll get your money back or that the insurance will cough up to cover your losses. The holiday you have been dreaming about and looking forward to [...]

Cruise ship cocaine grans arrested

Spanish police say they have smashed a drug trafficking ring which used old age pensioners as "mules" to smuggle cocaine into the country on transatlantic cruises. Two elderly women were among nine people arrested in Cadiz as they were about to bring the drugs ashore. The women's cabin, on the unidentified cruise ship, was found to contain 27 kg (59 lbs) of pure cocaine. "The group included members of an advanced age who boarded luxury transatlantic cruises to pick up the narcotic in South America. The 'mules' would pass themselves off as tourists," said a police spokesman. Another seven members [...]
